In late 2014, my good friend Kristin Aus finally tired of listening to me bemoan the loss of my stallion Flyin Panther. She sent me a link to an ad for an Ivory James son for sale…..and suggested we partner on him. I whined and complained, but in the end, did what she suggested and called the owner LeDona Newcomb, Newcomb Cattle Company in Oklahoma. LeDona and I visited about Ata Boy James. . . he sounded like a nice colt, certainly very well bred being a son of none other than Ivory James one of AQHA’s seriously up and coming race sires, and out of a very nice daughter of Heza Fast Man.
Barrel racers like the Ivory James horses…..and that’s what we raise here…..barrel horses. Owning half interest in Ata Boy James certainly made sense. Luckily, a friend of mine was traveling to the Heritage Place Sale, he had trailer space on the return trip, and Ata Boy James was on his way to North Dakota!
Ata, as he’s known around the ranch, arrived at the ranch in great shape! This sweet, kind, amazing soon to be two year old colt stepped off the trailer…he didn’t skip a beat, walked around his pen, rolled in the mud and settled right in. THAT is the Ata that I’ve gotten to know and love……easy going, very smart, so accepting of everything his life presents to him. We haven’t had to endure any ‘terrible two” behavior with a young stallion which is always nice!

In addition to his great disposition and demeanor,,,the ‘rest of the story’ will make Ata a very nice sire of barrel horses! His sire Ivory James http://www.stallionesearch.com/show_stallion.asp?horse=680 will has sired $23 million in race winners as of early 2023.
Ivory James and leading sire PYC Paint Your Wagon are full brothers, both being sons of Corona Cartel and out of the wonderful mare Dashin Follies, highest selling AQHA broodmare, selling in 2010 for the sum of $875,000.
His dam’s sire Heza Fast Man was not only a successful race horse with a SI-111/AAAT/ROM/Superior, (SW)17-10-4-1, $801,356, AQHA Racing Champion Three-year-old Colt, Won: Texas Classic Futurity(G1), Vandys Flash H.(G3), Kevin Burns Memorial Futurity, 2nd: All American Futurity(G1), All American Derby(G1), 3rd: QHBC Championship Classic(G1), Finalist: Remington Park Derby(G1), Z Wayne Griffin Directors S.(G3), he also had 2010 progeny winnings of over $11 million.
Take a look through Ata Boy James’ pedigree and you’ll find the horses that wrote AQHA racing history, the names that frequent the pedigrees of leading barrel horses and rodeo horses. Ata Boy James first foals will be born here at Flying O Ranch in 2016. They have both been sold prior to birth. His mares for the 2016 breeding season include AQHA daughters of Bullys on Fire, Panther Mountain, Royal Shake Em, Roll the Cash, Fishin Kisses and Gitngone and APHA daughters of Cherokee Treasured, Big Country, and Western Bugs.
Thank you Aus Ranch Performance Horses for partnering with us on this nice young horse. And thank you Newcomb Cattle Company for offering him for sale!
Here’s some photos of foals from Ata’s 2017 foal crop.
